AGCO Wins Appeal, Upholding Patent Non-Infringement Verdict Against John Deere
2025-01-30

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has confirmed that AGCO Corporation did not violate John Deere's patents related to high-speed planting systems. The dispute centered on Precision Planting's SpeedTube and vSet2 products, which were accused of mimicking Deere's ExactEmerge technology. However, the court upheld an earlier ruling that no infringement occurred. This decision provides farmers with continued access to alternative high-speed planting technologies. The case initially went to trial in 2022 in Delaware, where a jury already ruled in favor of AGCO. Following this latest verdict, AGCO expressed satisfaction, emphasizing its dedication to innovation and product integrity.

The legal battle revolved around the mechanics of seed meters and delivery systems used in high-speed planting. AGCO's technology projects and accelerates seeds into the ground, while Deere's system captures and discharges seeds at specific points. These distinctions played a crucial role in the jury's decision. An agricultural law attorney noted that this outcome offers farmers more choices in the market for high-speed planters. Despite the ruling, John Deere chose not to comment on the matter.

This verdict is part of a broader series of patent disputes in the agricultural technology sector. In 2023, another Iowa jury awarded John Deere $16.3 million from Kinze Manufacturing and Ag Leader Technology for infringing on their seeding method patents. However, these companies later reached an agreement with Deere, allowing them to continue using certain technologies and integrating data with the John Deere Operations Center. Such resolutions highlight the ongoing complexities in protecting and sharing agricultural innovations.

The appellate court's affirmation strengthens AGCO's position in the market and underscores the importance of technological differentiation in the agricultural equipment industry. With this ruling, farmers can confidently utilize AGCO's high-speed planting solutions without concerns over patent infringement. Moreover, it sets a precedent for future cases, encouraging companies to innovate while respecting intellectual property rights.
