The heart of Anchorage’s cultural scene is set to undergo significant changes as discussions unfold regarding the future of Broadway Alaska and the Performing Arts Center (PAC). At a recent forum hosted by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, key stakeholders addressed the challenges facing these institutions. The focus has shifted toward ensuring long-term sustainability while enhancing both artistic and audience experiences.

Leaders have identified critical infrastructure issues requiring immediate attention. According to Codie Costello, President & COO of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts (ACPA) and General Manager of Broadway Alaska, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted to address safety concerns and upgrade facilities. "Our primary objective is to reassess the building's structural integrity and implement necessary renovations," Costello explained. Deferred maintenance since the center opened in 1988 has accumulated into pressing needs, particularly concerning life safety systems and accessibility features. This assessment aims not only to modernize but also to align with current technological standards and financial planning.

Broadway Alaska anticipates resuming performances in the 2026-2027 season, following an interim period dedicated to revitalization efforts. In preparation, the ACPA seeks state funding alongside municipal contributions to support essential upgrades, such as fire suppression systems and elevator improvements. Despite the pause in Broadway programming, other performances will continue at the PAC, maintaining its vibrant role in the community. Looking ahead, Costello remains optimistic about achieving alignment among various factors necessary for successful restoration and sustained excellence in the arts.
