America's Largest One-Day Food Drive: A National Effort to Combat Hunger
2025-05-08

Each year, a nationwide initiative transforms postal routes into pathways of generosity. On the second Saturday of May, postal workers in over 10,000 communities across the United States play a crucial role in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive. This event, marking its significant impact for three decades, has successfully gathered and delivered more than 1.82 billion pounds of food to those in need. Communities benefit as non-perishable goods are collected from mailboxes and distributed to local food banks, shelters, and pantries.

This monumental effort involves collaboration among various organizations and thousands of volunteers. Spearheaded by the National Association of Letter Carriers, alongside rural carriers and other postal staff, the drive sees participation from nearly 1,500 branches spanning all 50 states and beyond. Partnering entities include USPS, AFL-CIO, CVS Health, Kellogg’s, and others. Residents can contribute simply by placing a bag of non-perishable items near their mailbox on the designated day, allowing carriers to collect and deliver these essentials directly to local charities.

Hunger affects countless individuals daily, with one in ten Americans experiencing food insecurity. This annual campaign provides an opportunity for everyone to make a tangible difference within their own communities. By uniting efforts and resources, citizens can actively participate in alleviating hunger and fostering compassion. Such collective action highlights the power of community support and underscores the importance of addressing basic human needs with empathy and solidarity.
