Back Porch Vibes: Dogfish Head and Grateful Dead Unite for Record Store Day
2025-04-09

A unique collaboration between Dogfish Head and the Grateful Dead is set to redefine Record Store Day festivities this year. Celebrating its tenth consecutive year as the "Official Beer of Record Store Day," Dogfish Head has partnered with the iconic band to release a vinyl compilation album titled ON A BACK PORCH VOL. 1. This exclusive record, available in independent record stores nationwide starting April 12th, features live performances from various eras of the Grateful Dead's storied history. Compiled by Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head’s founder, and David Lemieux, the Grateful Dead’s archivist, the album captures the essence of the band’s legendary sound. Accompanying this musical offering is a new craft beer, Grateful Dead Juicy Pale Ale, designed to complement the laid-back atmosphere of porch-side relaxation.

The ON A BACK PORCH VOL. 1 album spans five distinct years of the Grateful Dead's career, presenting both well-known tracks and lesser-heard gems. Each selection was meticulously chosen to reflect the band's evolution over time. According to Lemieux, mastering duties were handled by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer David Glasser, ensuring an impeccable listening experience. The album invites fans to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Grateful Dead music while savoring the refreshing flavors of Dogfish Head's latest creation. This partnership not only celebrates the enduring legacy of the Grateful Dead but also highlights the cultural significance of independently owned record stores.

In addition to the vinyl release, Dogfish Head is hosting a series of music-centric events at its Delaware locations to honor Record Store Day. At Chesapeake & Maine, guests can participate in interactive crafts benefiting the Developing Artist Collaboration (DAC), transforming ordinary items into personalized keepsakes. Meanwhile, Brewings & Eats will host a Grateful Dead listening party featuring DJ-curated vinyl sets, giveaways, and themed food offerings. The day culminates with a live performance by LoveLight, a tribute band known for their energetic renditions of the Grateful Dead's classics. On Sunday, the Milton Brewery continues the celebration with a market event showcasing local vendors, tie-dye workshops, and DJ-hosted record spinning sessions.

Beyond these activities, Dogfish INN serves as a hub for enthusiasts, providing special swag packages and guided bike tours to nearby record stores. Michael Kurtz, Co-Founder of Record Store Day, expressed excitement about the synergy between the Grateful Dead's music and Dogfish Head's beverages, noting how such collaborations enhance the community-focused spirit of the occasion. This initiative underscores the importance of fostering connections through shared experiences and analog media.

This Record Store Day marks a milestone in the ongoing relationship between Dogfish Head and the music industry. By blending culinary artistry with auditory pleasures, the company reinforces its commitment to creativity and quality. As participants gather to enjoy the fruits of this partnership, they contribute to the vibrant culture surrounding independent record stores, proving that tradition and innovation can coexist harmoniously.
