Bright Brewery Expands to Melbourne with Historic Prince Alfred Hotel
2025-02-27

A historic Melbourne landmark is set for a refreshing transformation as Bright Brewery takes over the Prince Alfred Hotel in Carlton. This iconic venue, located just outside Melbourne University and affectionately known as "P.A's," has long been a favorite among students and locals. Bright Brewery's head of national business development and brand manager, Evin Craney, highlights the unique opportunities this acquisition presents. With its two-story structure and rooftop beer garden, the pub offers an ideal setting for expanding Bright’s hospitality offerings beyond their northeast Victorian base. The brewery aims to integrate its brand into the pub while preserving its rich 99-year history and beloved identity.

The decision to expand into Melbourne was driven by Bright Brewery's ambition to establish more home bases across Australia. For Evin, finding a location that could maintain its own distinct character while showcasing Bright’s offerings was crucial. The Prince Alfred Hotel’s storied past and central location made it an ideal choice. “We wanted to create something more than just another brewpub,” Evin explains. “Our goal is to offer a comprehensive hospitality experience.” Over the past two decades, Bright Brewery has honed its hospitality skills, running its venue successfully and building a strong team and process. The timing felt right to leverage this expertise and explore new horizons.

Several breweries have recently followed a similar path, creating venues distinct from their main operations. Bodriggy reopened the Albion Hotel, and Range Brewing established multiple spaces in Brisbane. This strategic approach underscores the importance of strengthening core locations within the independent beer scene. At the Prince Alfred, changes will be subtle yet impactful. The pub will continue serving traditional fare alongside Bright’s beers and those from other independent producers. The most significant transformation will occur on the rooftop, now rebranded as the Bright Rooftop Bar, where the brewery plans to highlight its brand.

The area surrounding the pub also holds promise for Bright Brewery. Grattan Street, once closed to traffic, has reopened, and the nearby Metro Tunnel entrance adds convenience. The proximity to Melbourne University and local hospitals ensures a steady stream of visitors. Evin emphasizes the potential to introduce younger generations to independent beer, hoping they’ll develop a lifelong appreciation for craft brews. The Prince Alfred Hotel remains at its original address, 191 Grattan Street, Carlton, ready to welcome both old and new patrons.

Bright Brewery’s expansion into Melbourne marks a significant milestone. By integrating their brand into the Prince Alfred Hotel, they aim to enhance the pub’s legacy while introducing a fresh perspective. The combination of Bright’s brewing expertise and the pub’s historical charm promises an exciting new chapter for both establishments. As the area continues to evolve, the Prince Alfred Hotel stands ready to become a hub for craft beer enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
