2025-04-24

The Emporia Arts Center is set to unveil an extraordinary exhibition titled "Old Friends," showcasing the collaborative efforts of abstract painter Don Meyer and ceramics artist Dale Hartley. This unique event presents a harmonious interplay between Meyer's vibrant, bold paintings and Hartley's tactile, textured ceramic creations. The exhibit not only celebrates their individual artistic expressions but also highlights the profound influence of their shared love for the Flint Hills landscape on their work.

Don Meyer, renowned for his dynamic abstract art, studied at Emporia State University under notable professors such as Rex Hall and Richard Slimon. After earning his BFA and MA, he pursued further studies at Kansas State University, where Judy Love inspired him. Since 1980, Meyer has been immersed in the serene beauty of the Flint Hills, which profoundly influences his artistic vision and expressive style.

Dale Hartley, with a deep passion for ceramics, began her artistic journey as a child, nurtured by her family's creative environment. She majored in art and later taught ceramics as a graduate assistant at Emporia State University. Hartley's works are characterized by textures and sands gathered from her travels, each piece meticulously crafted using hand-rolled slabs and fired to achieve distinctive color and depth.

This exhibition, "Old Friends," pays tribute to the enduring friendship between Meyer and Hartley, illustrating how their mutual admiration for the Flint Hills has shaped their respective crafts. It underscores the strong bond between painting and ceramics, providing a rich, immersive experience for all art enthusiasts.
