Community Farewell Honors Longtime Food Pantry Volunteer
2025-03-26

A heartfelt farewell celebration was organized by the Nyssa Community Food Pantry to honor Wanda Scott, a devoted volunteer who is relocating to Montana. Since joining the pantry in 2012, Wanda has played an instrumental role in its operations, witnessing numerous changes, including managerial transitions and operational shifts during the pandemic. Despite dwindling donations, the demand for food assistance has increased over the years. Wanda emphasized the indispensable role of volunteers, from high school students to retirees, who collectively ensure the smooth functioning of the pantry through various tasks such as unloading shipments, stocking shelves, assisting clients, and maintaining cleanliness.

During her tenure, Wanda inspired others, including her young nephew, to embrace the spirit of volunteering. Her influence extended beyond mere assistance; she fostered a diverse team that brought varied perspectives, enhancing the pantry's efficiency. According to Wanda, this diversity enriched the ideas and experiences shared among volunteers, leading to continuous improvements. Volunteering became not only a way to help others but also a personal growth journey, offering insights into different lifestyles and fostering camaraderie with fellow volunteers.

Pantry Manager Betty Holcomb expressed concern about losing Wanda's extensive knowledge and dedication. The Nyssa Community Food Pantry continues to serve residents in the Nyssa/Adrian area, relying on generous contributions from local businesses, farmers, churches, and individuals. Operating at the corner of 5th and Main Streets, the pantry is open specific hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays, welcoming both donors and new volunteers.

In related news, the Nyssa Public Library Board will initiate a food drive starting April 15, focusing on kid-friendly meals and snacks. Non-perishable items like peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, and canned goods are needed, alongside monetary donations for perishables. Donations can be dropped off at the library or via the book drop.

The departure of Wanda Scott marks a significant moment for the Nyssa Community Food Pantry, highlighting the profound impact one individual can have on a community initiative. As the pantry moves forward, it underscores the importance of continued support and participation from the community to sustain its vital services. Through collective efforts, the pantry aims to address food insecurity while fostering a spirit of giving and understanding.
