A groundbreaking development is set to transform Douglas County with the introduction of a state-of-the-art sports complex. The facility, named Zebulon in honor of explorer Zebulon Pike, aims to provide diverse recreational opportunities for all ages. Approved by the Board of Douglas County Commissioners on March 18, this ambitious project will partner with Sterling Ranch Development Company and other entities. Strategically located near Ward Road and Waterton Road, Zebulon promises to revitalize an area once dominated by industrial use, including a former dynamite factory, into a vibrant hub for families and businesses alike.
According to Commissioner George Teal, Zebulon will serve as a pivotal force driving change in the region. The expansive grounds will accommodate a wide range of sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, football, soccer, and hockey. In addition to providing top-notch sporting facilities, over 400 acres of surrounding land will be preserved as open space. Commissioner Abe Laydon expressed excitement about entering what he described as the "golden era" for Douglas County, where community desires align with ambitious projects aimed at enhancing quality of life.
Funding mechanisms have been carefully planned, with initial resources coming from a voter-approved sales tax designated for parks. Future phases will rely on tax increment funding. Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle emphasized that the time has come to act upon taxpayer expectations by investing in their approved funds and collaborating with partners to materialize the community's aspirations.
The partnership extends beyond Sterling Ranch Development Company to include the Sterling Ranch Community Authority Board and KT Development. Phase one envisions an indoor sports center featuring three ice rinks alongside basketball courts, complemented by dedicated complexes for soccer and baseball. Although still in its design phase, anticipation builds for these premier facilities. Furthermore, Douglas County plans to host a live town hall meeting in April to engage residents regarding Zebulon and related park initiatives, though the exact date remains unannounced.
This transformative endeavor marks a significant milestone for Douglas County, reflecting both public support and strategic collaboration among stakeholders. By blending advanced sports infrastructure with environmental preservation, Zebulon positions itself as a beacon for recreation and sustainability. Residents eagerly await further details and the realization of this promising vision, which promises to redefine the county's landscape and enhance community well-being.
