On December 26, a historic handover took place, signaling the completion of the Truong Minh Dream—a 65,000 dwt bulk carrier that stands as a testament to Vietnam’s growing prowess in shipbuilding. This impressive vessel, measuring approximately 200 meters in length, has been certified by Japan’s ClassNK, affirming its compliance with international standards and readiness for global operations.
The Truong Minh Dream was meticulously designed through a collaborative effort between Vietnam Shipbuilding Engineering JSC (VISEC) and Bluetech Finland. It features a robust double-bottom structure and is powered by a single propeller. Equipped with five cargo holds, the ship boasts hydraulically operated double-sided hatch covers and four cranes capable of lifting up to 30 tons each. While adhering to conventional bulk carrier design principles, this vessel surpasses previous domestic builds in terms of size and sophistication.
The construction of the Truong Minh Dream was carried out by Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of the Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC). Despite SBIC undergoing reorganization under state-run bankruptcy proceedings, the project proceeded smoothly. The vessel was successfully launched on May 11 and completed rigorous sea trials by December 4. The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense, oversaw the process to ensure its alignment with national objectives.
This achievement underscores Vietnam’s commitment to developing a cost-effective alternative to traditional shipbuilding giants like China, Japan, and South Korea. The government aims to present Vietnam as a competitive player in the industry, offering lower costs without compromising on quality or safety. By submitting a comprehensive plan for approval by the Prime Minister in early 2025, SBIC intends to further enhance the capacity and efficiency of domestic shipyards.
The Truong Minh Dream was handed over to Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry JSC, which will oversee its operation from the northern port city of Hai Phong. Initially, the company had ordered two 65,000 dwt bulk carriers, with work on the second vessel commencing after the launch of the first. During the handover ceremony, an announcement was made regarding additional orders for two more vessels of the same class, reinforcing the company’s confidence in the project.
Government officials highlighted that this development supports the broader strategy of fostering Vietnam’s maritime economy. The successful delivery of the Truong Minh Dream exemplifies the nation’s dedication to advancing its shipbuilding industry and solidifying its role in the global shipping market. As Vietnam continues to expand its maritime infrastructure, it positions itself as a rising force in the international shipping arena, ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
