Commercial Expansion Leads the Way

With a total valuation of over $2.8 billion in 2024, this sector more than doubled its performance compared to the previous year. Major projects like the Google Data Center and the expansion of Arts United underscored the county's commitment to fostering business development. These initiatives not only brought new opportunities but also set the stage for future residential growth, as more people moved to the area seeking employment.

Building Commissioner Joe Hutter emphasized that commercial expansion is a precursor to residential development. As businesses grow and create job opportunities, the demand for housing naturally follows. "When we see a spike in commercial construction, it usually takes a year or two before residential numbers catch up," he explained. "We're laying the foundation now for a thriving community." The increase in commercial permits reflects the county's strategic approach to attracting and supporting new enterprises, which in turn fuels economic vitality. The introduction of a new software system on January 1, 2024, streamlined various processes, including online annual license renewals for contractors. Additionally, field staff utilized new tablets to submit building inspection data directly from job sites, enhancing efficiency. Despite a slight decrease in the number of inspections—from 72,000 in 2023 to 67,000 in 2024—the value of each project increased significantly.
