Given the remote nature of the area, accessibility was a significant concern. Extra efforts were made to ensure driver safety, including targeted training for driving on uneven and sloped terrain and regular inspections of braking systems for vehicles and construction equipment. This attention to detail played a crucial role in making the roads safe for visitors.
In addition to the road network, the project team also constructed four landscaped picnic areas around Wenchi Crater Lake. This volcanic crater-formed lake adds to the natural beauty of the area and provides a perfect setting for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. The team also built a marathon running track, paying homage to Ethiopia's competitive marathon running tradition.
The availability of suitable local construction materials was limited, with only volcanic ash available for fill. However, the project team showed great innovation by combining the volcanic ash with sub-base material brought to the site to create a capping layer. To meet specification requirements, a three-stage crushing process was used in stone rolling production, and different screen meshes were employed in the vibrating screen stage to adjust the particle size distribution. Volcanic ash was added during the base compaction stage to maintain a specific passing rate proportion.
This innovative approach not only addressed the material shortage but also ensured the quality and durability of the road network.
The lack of fill material led the team to choose excavation for most sections during the design phase. Contractors implemented drainage systems and slope plantings to protect against slope collapse and erosion. Over 44 hectares of greenery were planted throughout all excavation and fill areas, enhancing the natural beauty of the landscape while also providing environmental benefits.
For culvert construction with a foundation excavation depth of more than 6 m, the team used a detailed technical safety methodology and conducted emergency drills related to deep foundation pit construction. This ensured the safety of workers and the stability of the structures.
In addition to the accessibility and material supply challenges, the project also faced security issues, a long rainy season, and supply cost pressures. However, through careful planning and effective management, the project managed to complete on time and on budget, demonstrating the team's ability to overcome various obstacles.
The Wenchi – Dendi Ecotourism Road Network Lot-1 is a shining example of what can be achieved through innovation, dedication, and teamwork. It not only provides access to a beautiful natural area but also contributes to the local economy and tourism industry.
