Challenges Arise in the Potential Showdown Between Benavidez and Bivol
2025-03-31

A potential matchup between David Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol continues to face significant delays, despite earlier anticipation for a contest that could unify all four 175-pound championships. Although Benavidez, who has transitioned into this weight class with hopes of achieving undisputed champion status, was eager to challenge the Russian contender after his victory over Artur Beterbiev, new developments have emerged complicating the scenario. Promoter Turki Alalshikh revealed that Bivol's immediate focus lies in arranging a third bout against Beterbiev rather than engaging with Benavidez.

The WBC had previously mandated that Bivol defend his titles against Benavidez, setting an April 8 deadline for negotiations. Despite rumors suggesting progress towards an agreement, these claims were refuted by boxing journalist Dan Rafael. He clarified on X that discussions regarding purse distribution encountered obstacles when Benavidez's camp requested a 55-45 split favoring Bivol, which the WBC adjusted to a 60-40 split instead. Rafael further explained that while the fight remains an option as per the WBC directive, it is not necessarily a priority for Bivol, who retains alternative choices.

Eddie Hearn echoed similar sentiments, confirming that plans involving Bivol currently revolve around another clash with Beterbiev rather than facing Benavidez. In pursuit of retaining all championship belts, they remain open to vacating the WBC title if necessary. Should Bivol relinquish this belt, Benavidez might find himself elevated directly to undisputed champion status due to his interim position or pursue other opportunities within the division. This situation underscores the intricate dynamics involved in aligning championship matches amidst competing priorities and strategic decisions.
