Community Calls for Safety Reforms After Seventh Grader's Critical Accident
2025-02-07

An urgent call for improved traffic safety measures has emerged following a severe accident involving a middle school student in Crowley ISD. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a 12-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near McPherson Boulevard and Summer Creek Drive. This roundabout, located close to Summer Creek Middle School, is frequently traversed by students traveling to and from school. The young rider, who was using his scooter, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Cook Children’s Medical Center. Despite his current condition, medical professionals are optimistic about his recovery.

The community has long expressed concerns about the safety of this intersection. Residents report witnessing numerous near-misses and observing the chaotic mix of vehicles and pedestrians, especially during school hours. According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, multiple crashes have been reported at this location over the past few years, although none previously involved pedestrians. In response to these ongoing issues, the City of Fort Worth has implemented some safety measures, such as adding signage and repainting crosswalks. However, following Tuesday's accident, officials are now exploring more comprehensive solutions.

Council Member Jared Williams emphasized the city's commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety. He mentioned that all options are being considered, including converting the roundabout into a four-way stop or installing traffic lights. Williams highlighted that similar improvements are already planned for other intersections in the area. The mother of the injured boy, Rachel Taylor, voiced her strong support for these changes. She stressed that without significant modifications, she cannot allow her son to use his scooter again. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing public safety and ensuring that our streets are designed with the well-being of all users in mind.
