In the aftermath of recent devastating wildfires that ravaged Izmir, Western Turkey, a remarkable display of human compassion emerged as volunteers united to safeguard wildlife. Over a hundred individuals responded to a public appeal from the Projects for Animals Association (HIPDER) and the Afalina Animal Rights Community. On July 5th, these dedicated teams ventured into the scorched forests of Buca, transforming a scene of desolation into one of hope and concerted effort.

These impromptu groups, largely composed of individuals who were previously unacquainted, meticulously navigated the fire-affected zones where the inferno had recently been brought under control. Their persistent search efforts led to the successful rescue of a variety of wildlife, including two tortoises, two sheltopusiks (also known as legless lizards), and a striped viper. Upon rescue, some animals received immediate veterinary attention directly at the site, while others were transported to facilities where they could receive proper protective care and rehabilitation. Funda Bonomo, the founder of HIPDER, expressed the deep emotional impact of these rescues, noting the critical timing involved in saving lives. Volunteer Izgen Cebbar underscored the profound satisfaction derived from each rescue, emphasizing how these acts of kindness, though arduous, fostered a powerful sense of community and shared purpose.

The extent of the tragedy extends beyond the immediate impact of the fires, revealing deeper ecological concerns. Volunteer Tolga Çevik voiced dismay over the significant amount of human refuse, such as plastic bottles, discarded furniture, and even toilets, discovered deep within the burned forest. This observation brings to light a critical issue: human negligence significantly exacerbates environmental disasters. With over 3,000 fires recorded in Turkey this year—1,305 of which occurred in forested regions, and 624 in the past week alone—the severity of the situation is undeniable. This escalating crisis serves as a stark reminder of how human activities, including widespread littering, contribute to climate degradation and highlight the urgent need for individuals globally to adopt more sustainable practices, respect natural habitats, and actively participate in safeguarding our planet.
