De Pere's Downtown Renaissance: A $90 Million Transformation
2025-01-06

In the heart of De Pere, Wisconsin, a significant urban renewal project is set to reshape the city’s skyline and revitalize its downtown area. The ambitious $90 million investment aims to breathe new life into the former Shopko site on North Broadway. Over the past few years, design work has been underway for several new structures that promise to redefine the city’s landscape. With construction expected to commence this spring, residents and officials alike anticipate substantial changes to the area. Mayor James Boyd expressed optimism about the transformation, emphasizing the importance of embracing these developments for the future of De Pere.

The Details of De Pere's Urban Renewal

In the charming city of De Pere, the coming years will witness an extraordinary transformation. Since the closure of Shopko nearly six years ago, the 60,000-square-foot lot has remained vacant until it was finally cleared just over a year ago. Now, in the crisp, early days of spring, the first phase of construction is poised to begin. The De Pere 230 Development Partners LLC is spearheading the initiative with plans to erect a five-story apartment complex featuring 60 units and ground-floor retail space along an extended William Street. Developer Jason Tadych explained that the building's height was intentionally limited to ensure harmony with the surrounding neighborhood.

Additionally, a five-story hotel with 90 rooms will rise at the intersection of Wisconsin and James Streets. Initially, the hotel was slated for Broadway, but developers opted to relocate it closer to the public parking ramp, which will accommodate over 200 vehicles. This strategic move addresses concerns about parking availability as the influx of new residential and commercial spaces increases demand. Mayor Boyd highlighted the necessity for both housing and hospitality options, underscoring the foresight of the developers in addressing these needs.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing regarding the northwestern corner of the property. When initial conceptual plans were unveiled in the summer of 2023, proposals included buildings ranging from six to seven stories. The final designs are still being refined, ensuring that each element aligns perfectly with the vision for De Pere's renewed downtown.

From a journalist's perspective, this development signifies not only a physical transformation but also a symbolic rebirth for De Pere. It reflects the community's willingness to adapt and embrace change, fostering growth and opportunity. As the city evolves, it sets an example of how thoughtful planning and strategic investments can rejuvenate urban centers, creating vibrant spaces that benefit both residents and visitors alike. This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between local government and private developers, paving the way for a brighter future for De Pere.
