Denmark's postal service is undergoing a monumental change, concluding its 400-year legacy of letter delivery. By the close of 2025, PostNord, the national postal carrier, will discontinue traditional mail services, symbolizing a societal pivot towards digital communication.

This transformative decision by PostNord is a direct consequence of a dramatic decline in physical mail volume. Since 2000, the quantity of letters handled has fallen by more than 90%, with the typical Danish resident now receiving just one letter each month. Conversely, the surge in online retail and parcel shipments has reshaped the logistics landscape, prompting PostNord to restructure its operations by eliminating 2,200 positions in its unprofitable letter division while creating 700 new roles in its thriving parcel delivery sector.

While a reduction in letter volume implies less paper consumption and potential environmental benefits, the simultaneous increase in parcel deliveries necessitates addressing the associated rise in packaging waste and transportation emissions. The overarching challenge lies in ensuring that digitalization genuinely diminishes the ecological footprint, rather than simply relocating it.
