2025-01-28

A high-speed pursuit involving a 19-year-old from Dolton unfolded early Monday morning in DuPage County, leading to a dramatic series of events that culminated in the arrest of Jujuan Barnes. Around 3 a.m., authorities were alerted about a black Dodge Charger being stolen from a dealership in Kane County. The vehicle was later spotted by Villa Park police, who attempted to stop it but instead initiated a dangerous chase reaching speeds up to 106 mph. Following a crash and foot pursuit, Barnes was eventually apprehended along with another suspect. The incident also uncovered firearms and burglary tools, highlighting the severity of the situation. Barnes now faces multiple felony charges as he awaits trial.

On January 27th, shortly after midnight, law enforcement received reports of a stolen Dodge Charger valued at nearly $44,000 from a dealership in Kane County. Initially pursued by St. Charles police, the vehicle managed to evade capture and entered Villa Park. Local officers identified the car and tried to halt its progress, but the driver refused to comply. A perilous chase ensued, weaving through North Avenue and Ardmore Avenue, with speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The pursuit intensified when spike strips deployed by officers at I-290 and North Avenue disabled the Charger. However, the driver of a trailing white Infiniti maneuvered around the obstacle and continued alongside the Charger. Both vehicles then merged onto I-290 eastbound, exiting at St. Charles Road into an Elmhurst residential area. There, the suspects abandoned the Charger and transferred to the Infiniti, prolonging the chase back onto the highway.

The Infiniti lost control between St. Charles Road and Mannheim Road, colliding with a Volvo. Four individuals fled on foot, but officers quickly apprehended two, including Barnes. During the arrest, Barnes was subdued with a taser. Authorities discovered a loaded Glock handgun, burglary tools, and reprogrammable key fobs in his possession. Further investigation of the Infiniti revealed additional weapons, including a loaded RDA handgun with a 50-round drum magazine and a loaded Glock 22 with a similar capacity.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that such actions pose significant risks to public safety. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of multiple police departments, which were crucial in bringing Barnes to justice. Chief Mike Rivas of the Villa Park Police Department echoed this sentiment, underscoring the department's commitment to preventing future crimes. Barnes is currently held in custody and faces serious charges, including aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding, and unlawful use of a weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 24th.
