East Oakland Boxing Association's Former Director Pleads Guilty to Fraud
2025-04-21

The former executive director of the East Oakland Boxing Association has opted to plead guilty to charges related to mail fraud, tax evasion, and misappropriation of funds, including a significant donation from NBA star Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha. According to court documents, Howard Solomon will formally change his plea in U.S. District Court under Judge Yvonne Gonzales Rogers. The case highlights how funds intended for community programs were diverted for personal use, leading to severe legal consequences.

Attorney Randy Sue Pollock represents Solomon but declined to provide further details prior to the plea hearing. In March, federal prosecutors accused Solomon of embezzling money from the nonprofit organization, which provides boxing lessons and internships to young people in East Oakland. The misused funds reportedly covered expenses such as Amazon purchases, vacation rentals, and even the acquisition of a Ford Explorer. Additionally, Solomon allegedly siphoned off a $50,000 donation made by Stephen and Ayesha Curry during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2019, depositing it directly into his personal account.

Beyond the fraudulent financial activities, Solomon faces charges of filing false income tax returns for four consecutive years: 2018 through 2021. These allegations paint a picture of systematic misuse of resources entrusted to him for charitable purposes. Following Solomon’s initial arraignment, the East Oakland Boxing Association issued a statement condemning these actions while emphasizing their ongoing cooperation with authorities. The association affirmed its commitment to rebuilding trust and continuing vital services for local youth.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Green and Amala James are prosecuting this case, following an investigation conducted by the IRS. The situation underscores the importance of accountability within organizations tasked with serving vulnerable communities. Moving forward, the East Oakland Boxing Association aims to restore confidence among supporters and reaffirm its mission to empower young individuals in the area.
