Expanding Horizons: I-41 Enhancement Project Transforms Wrightstown Area
2025-01-07

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT) has embarked on an ambitious project to expand Interstate 41 from four to six lanes between Northland Drive in Grand Chute and Scheuring Road in De Pere. This multi-year initiative, expected to be completed by 2030, will significantly impact the Wrightstown area, including several lane closures and realignments. Residents can anticipate changes to their daily commutes as well as opportunities for public engagement sessions to learn more about the project.

In preparation for this transformation, WISDOT plans to introduce phased closures and reconstructions. County U will experience multiple closures over the next few years, starting with a two-week closure in summer 2025 to modify the roadway under I-41. Additional nighttime closures are scheduled for fall 2025 to demolish the existing bridge and install new girders. By 2026, construction will focus on building a new roundabout and frontage road, followed by a full interchange reconstruction in 2027.

Preparation and Adaptation: Navigating Construction Closures

Residents and commuters should prepare for significant disruptions as construction progresses. In 2025, County U will undergo its first major closure during the summer months. For a period of 14 days, the highway will close between the northbound and southbound ramps to accommodate modifications necessary for vertical clearance under the reconstructed I-41. These adjustments ensure that the interstate can safely pass over County U without obstructions.

To minimize disruption, WISDOT has strategically planned closures during off-peak hours. In fall 2025, County U will close again at night to facilitate the demolition of the existing bridge over the county highway and the installation of new girders for the upcoming overpass. During these nighttime operations, County U will remain fully closed to traffic, ensuring safety and efficiency in completing critical infrastructure improvements. The department has also scheduled informational meetings to keep the public informed and address any concerns regarding the timeline and impacts of these closures.

Building for the Future: New Infrastructure Enhancements

In 2026, the focus shifts to constructing a new segment of the East Frontage Road and integrating it with County U via a roundabout. This phase requires closing County U south of the northbound ramps for approximately two months. The addition of this frontage road and roundabout aims to improve traffic flow and provide safer access points for local residents and travelers alike.

The final phase in 2027 involves a comprehensive reconstruction of the County U interchange. This includes rebuilding both northbound and southbound ramps, along with constructing new roundabouts at the exits connecting to County U. These enhancements are designed to streamline traffic movement and enhance overall safety. Public involvement remains crucial throughout the project, with WISDOT hosting meetings in Appleton, De Pere, and virtually to gather input and provide updates on the progress of this transformative infrastructure initiative.
