In a comprehensive investigation published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers explored the connection between consuming flavonoid-rich foods and healthy aging outcomes. The study utilized data from two large cohorts: the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) and the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS). Over 86,000 participants aged 60 or older were monitored for extended periods, with detailed dietary records collected through food frequency questionnaires.

Key findings emerged regarding specific foods such as tea, apples, berries, citrus fruits, red wine, and dark chocolate. These items are rich in flavonoids—natural compounds known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Notably, consistent tea consumption was linked to reduced risks across all measured aging outcomes, even at moderate levels.

Further analysis revealed that maintaining or increasing intake of these foods could lower the likelihood of frailty, poor mental health, and physical impairment. For instance, reducing weekly servings by seven or more increased frailty risk by up to 18% in women. Conversely, adding just three servings per day showed notable reductions in adverse aging effects.

Interestingly, while certain flavonoid subclasses like anthocyanins and flavanones demonstrated broad protective benefits, others such as flavan-3-ol monomers showed no significant impact on mental health. Gender differences were also noted, with fewer associations observed among male participants, possibly due to shorter follow-up durations and lifestyle variations.
