After moving from Pune, India, to Buffalo, New York, in 2020 to study biomedical engineering, I quickly realized that securing employment would require more than just academic excellence. Despite dedicating countless hours to applications and leveraging various resources, including financial support from my parents, I faced repeated rejections. The job market seemed indifferent to my efforts, and the uncertainty weighed heavily on me.International students like myself face unique challenges, especially when it comes to visa sponsorships. Many employers are hesitant to commit to sponsoring visas, which adds another layer of complexity to the job search process. Even with access to three years of OPT (Optional Practical Training) through my STEM degree, I found that mentioning potential future sponsorship needs often led to immediate rejection. This Catch-22 situation made it clear that traditional job hunting methods were not enough.

In the fall of 2023, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. One key change was optimizing my résumé for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems), which many companies use to screen candidates. I used advanced tools like ChatGPT Premium to analyze my résumé against job descriptions, aiming for an 85% match rate. While I can't say for certain if this was the turning point, I did notice a significant increase in callbacks and interview invitations.Another critical factor was networking. A friend who had recently joined Tesla recommended me to their recruiter. This referral opened doors that had previously been closed. During the interview, I emphasized my eligibility to work under OPT for three years, which alleviated concerns about immediate visa sponsorship. This transparency and strategic communication helped me secure a position as a Powerwall technical support specialist at Tesla in October 2024.
