In the grandeur of New Orleans’ Hilton Riverside Hotel, an annual tradition unfolded with elegance and poise. Le Début des Jeunes Filles de la Nouvelle Orléans showcased 21 young women in a formal presentation that set the tone for the upcoming debutante season. Master of ceremonies Mark Romig guided the event, which featured a reserved applause until all participants had been introduced collectively. The evening included a reserved first dance between fathers and daughters to the classic tune "Thank Heaven for Little Girls." Attendees then mingled before enjoying breakfast fare, adhering to strict rules about photography and attire. Each debutante was accompanied by their father during the procession, where they performed graceful curtsies, symbolizing respect and tradition.
As night descended upon the Grand Ballroom, guests dressed in formal wear gathered for this prestigious event. Men opted for white linen suits while women chose pastel hues, creating a vibrant yet sophisticated atmosphere. Once inside, attendees found their assigned tables, awaiting the ceremonial introduction of the debutantes. At precisely 8:30 p.m., under the musical direction of Robert Maxwell leading his late father's orchestra, the national anthem commenced the proceedings. Following introductions, four distinguished young men escorted each debutante onto the stage after she executed a charming curtsy towards the audience.
The chosen escorts were Messieurs Michael Shepherd Baumer, Lynton Guy Cook IV, John McDonald Currence II, and Walker McCall Montgomery. Each young lady selected a unique song to accompany her entrance alongside her proud father. Among these selections were timeless tracks like “Ring of Fire,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Sweet Caroline.” After all 21 presentations concluded with heartfelt bows before their mothers, the gathering transitioned into celebratory festivities filled with dancing inspired by hits such as ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.”
Paul Lacour designed stunning summer-themed decorations featuring black drapes behind white lattice panels adorned with urns brimming with white blooms interspersed with pink accents at table centerpieces. This visual splendor complemented the joyous ambiance perfectly as generations came together on the dance floor celebrating youthfulness and camaraderie through music that transcended eras.
As the night progressed, the energy in the room reached new heights when the band played "Dancing Queen." The infectious rhythm prompted both the honored debutantes and their families to join in the celebration, transforming the ballroom into a lively scene of intergenerational revelry. This memorable evening not only marked the beginning of the debutante season but also reinforced cherished customs passed down through generations, leaving an indelible mark on all who attended.
