HP Acquires Humane's Assets as AI Pin Service Shuts Down
2025-02-19

Humane, an innovative AI startup, has announced the immediate discontinuation of its AI Pin product. The company has sold significant parts of its business to HP for $116 million. This strategic move includes the transfer of employees, software, patents, and patent applications. While some customers will receive refunds, others may be left without compensation. The transition marks a significant shift in Humane's focus and opens new opportunities within HP’s AI innovation lab.

The End of an Era for Humane's AI Pin

Humane's decision to discontinue the AI Pin came as a surprise to many. Despite initial excitement and recognition, including a spot on Time magazine’s list of best inventions, the device faced numerous challenges. Customer feedback highlighted issues with design and functionality, leading to declining interest. As a result, Humane made the difficult choice to halt sales and sever server connections by the end of February 2025.

Launched in November 2023, the AI Pin was marketed as a revolutionary personal assistant that could handle calls, texts, and even project displays via laser. However, it struggled to meet consumer expectations. In response to criticism, Humane attempted to refine the product and lower its price from $699 to $499. Nonetheless, these efforts were not enough to sustain market demand. Refunds will only be available to those who received their devices after November 15, 2024, with requests needing to be submitted by February 27, 2025.

New Beginnings at HP IQ

The acquisition by HP signals a fresh start for Humane’s co-founders, Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, who will join HP’s new AI innovation lab, HP IQ. This division aims to develop an intelligent ecosystem across HP’s products and services, focusing on the future of work. The integration of Humane’s assets into HP promises to enhance the company’s capabilities in AI technology.

Bongiorno and Chaudhri, former Apple employees, founded Humane in 2019 with ambitious plans to revolutionize personal assistants. Their vision for the AI Pin was just the beginning of what they hoped would be a transformative journey. Now, as part of HP IQ, they have the resources and support to continue pushing boundaries in AI development. HP’s commitment to this new venture underscores its dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. The closure of Humane’s AI Pin chapter is a reminder of the risks and rewards inherent in pioneering new technologies, but it also highlights the potential for growth and innovation within established tech giants like HP.
