Innovative Music Festival Course Empowers Students to Lead and Create
2025-05-01

A groundbreaking initiative in music education has taken shape through the generous support of Marco Londei and Liquin Wang, founders of the Farfy Foundation. Their encounter with students and faculty members who were redefining musical boundaries inspired them to contribute in 2023. This act of generosity ignited an ambitious vision in Distinguished Professor of Music Steven Schick: why not design a course that would teach students the intricacies of organizing a music festival, and then assist them in bringing it to life? By fall 2024, this vision materialized as a two-part curriculum within the Department of Music.

Launched under Schick's guidance, the program welcomed its first cohort in winter 2025. Participants delved into a variety of essential skills, such as financial planning, venue coordination, artist selection, and promotional strategies. As the spring semester advanced, the steering committee transitioned into compensated roles, empowering students to take charge in areas like programming management, live audio recording, and marketing campaigns. Through this hands-on experience, students are gaining invaluable expertise while fostering a vibrant community among their peers.

This unique approach not only cultivates the next generation of music leaders but also emphasizes collaboration and creativity. The diverse range of musical genres featured in the festival showcases the students' dedication and passion for their craft. By enabling young musicians to organize and execute such events themselves, the program instills confidence, enhances practical skills, and inspires a lasting commitment to innovation in the arts.
