Kazkara Coffee Roasters has officially launched its distinctive roastery cafe in Hazel Park, a vibrant community just outside Detroit. This establishment is not merely a coffee shop but a carefully curated space where the meticulous craft of coffee roasting intertwines with the captivating world of visual art, fostering a thriving creative community.
At the heart of Kazkara's unique approach is its commitment to integrating art into the coffee experience. The company collaborates with Latin American artists, licensing their original works, which often draw inspiration from the very regions where Kazkara's coffee beans are cultivated. These bespoke licensing agreements extend the artwork's influence beyond gallery walls, transforming coffee packaging and related merchandise into canvases that tell compelling stories.
Valeria Suing, co-founder of Kazkara alongside her brother Pedro Suing, emphasizes the profound connection between coffee and culture. She explains that the visual art communicates the broader narrative of the coffee's origin, linking it to the personal memories and cultural heritage of the artists. Each coffee label becomes a chapter in a larger story, deeply rooted in identity and the multifaceted ways individuals engage with coffee beyond its taste.
The 800-square-foot cafe, bathed in a palette of white, yellow, and natural wood, provides a serene backdrop for the vibrant artwork. A counter adorned with stools offers clear views of the 6-kilo Giesen W6E roaster, inviting patrons to observe the roasting process. The cafe also boasts a spacious, plant-adorned covered patio, perfect for outdoor relaxation. The design ethos centers on creating a welcoming, purposeful space that nurtures community connections through its espresso and brew bar offerings.
The Suing siblings personally oversaw the design, construction, and installation of the cafe's modern furnishings, utilizing butcher block surfaces and locally sourced metal. Even the shop's signage, much like the artwork that adorns the coffee packaging, showcases the meticulous touch of a hand-painting artist, further reinforcing the commitment to artistry and local collaboration.
While Pedro Suing spearheads the coffee program, focusing on flavor profiles and sourcing transparency, the culinary offerings are built on strong local partnerships, prioritizing high-quality ingredients. Locally baked pastries, house-made syrups, and signature seasonal drinks complement the coffee experience, adding a fresh and localized dimension to the menu.
Hailing from Ecuador, the Suing siblings initially launched Kazkara in Toronto, Ontario, primarily through online sales and local pop-ups, specializing in roasted Ecuadorian coffees. The company's trajectory shifted significantly after partnering with Miguel Vidal, the visionary behind the DTROITR social enterprise coffee brand. This strategic merger led to the formation of DTROITR LLC, owned by Vidal, bringing all operations under one roof while maintaining the distinct identities of both brands.
The merger has paved the way for exciting future developments, including the upcoming DTROITR cafe in Ferndale, with Kazkara assuming responsibility for its roasting operations. Valeria Suing highlights the company's focus on expanding wholesale accounts, growing their online platform, and launching subscription services. This expansion signifies a broader commitment to establishing community-centric coffee spaces that are deeply rooted in purpose and connection, enriching the lives of their patrons.
