Kearney's SportsPlex: Final Construction, 2025 Opening
2024-12-17
The City of Kearney in Nebraska is on the verge of a significant sporting milestone. The SportsPlex, a $45 million project that was approved by the city council in 2021 and presented in 2023, is now in its final stages of construction and is scheduled to open in spring 2025. A 'topping off' ceremony was held in April 2024 to mark the placement of the final beam.

Project Funding and Taxation

This project was voted on and approved by voters during a special election in 2021. It is funded through general obligation bonds paid for by the Nebraska Department of Revenue from a turn-back tax. This tax utilizes local sales tax and an extension of the restaurant place and drinking tax, which was established in 2015. The city also allocated funds to pay off the bond, ensuring that taxpayers will not bear any additional costs.

Facility Features and Capabilities

Once opened, the 209,000-square-foot SportsPlex will be a hub for a wide range of indoor youth and adult sports tournaments, camps, leagues, and events. Lauren Brandt, the SportsPlex Director, emphasizes the need for more indoor space in the community. The facility offers unique features such as indoor field turf, which is currently lacking in Kearney. Additionally, the ample gym space is a major attraction. This facility will provide a platform for athletes of all ages and backgrounds to engage in various sports activities. It will not only enhance the sporting opportunities in the area but also contribute to the growth and development of the local sports community.

In 25 years, it will be seen as a wise decision that has enhanced the quality of life in Kearney. It will create memories and opportunities for generations to come.
