Major Transportation Projects Set to Transform Salem and Surrounding Areas
2024-12-26

In 2025, the city of Salem and its surrounding regions are gearing up for a series of significant transportation infrastructure projects. These initiatives aim to enhance road safety, improve traffic flow, and modernize existing facilities. Notable projects include the widening of McGilchrist Street, the Interstate 5 Donald-Aurora interchange upgrade, and various bridge renovations. Additionally, several smaller-scale improvements such as adding bicycle lanes and pedestrian pathways will be implemented across multiple locations. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment to advancing urban mobility and ensuring safer travel for residents and visitors alike.

Expanding Major Highways and Interchanges

The year 2025 marks a pivotal moment for expanding key highways and interchanges around Salem. The Interstate 5 Donald-Aurora interchange project, set to conclude in 2027, will see substantial changes in 2025 with the construction of new on and off-ramps for southbound lanes and a northbound on-ramp. Moreover, bridges for both directions will be built, along with realignments of Ehlen Road and Delores Way. Another significant development is the Newberg-Dundee Bypass project, which aims to improve intersections and add lanes, sidewalks, ramps, and drainage systems. Phase two of this project will commence in 2025, focusing on Highway 18 and Highway 219.

These ambitious highway expansion projects reflect a strategic effort to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity within the region. For instance, the Interstate 5 Donald-Aurora interchange will introduce improved traffic management systems, including new traffic lights under the bridge. Meanwhile, the Newberg-Dundee Bypass project will facilitate smoother traffic flow by creating a bypass route that diverts vehicles away from congested areas. The addition of pedestrian connections and sound walls further emphasizes the importance of integrating safety measures into these large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Both projects underscore the long-term vision of fostering sustainable growth and improving quality of life for local communities.

Enhancing Local Roads and Bridges

Salem's local roads and bridges are also receiving much-needed attention in 2025. The McGilchrist Street widening project, spanning from Pringle Road to 25th Street, is progressing steadily, with the second phase scheduled to begin in spring. This phase involves closing eastbound lanes and reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. Ultimately, the project will widen the street, add lanes, a center turn lane, and improve intersections, sidewalks, and stormwater drains. Similarly, the Pudding River Bridge replacement on Hazelgreen Road is nearing completion, providing a more durable concrete structure to replace the aging timber pile bridge.

Beyond major highways, numerous bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects are underway. The Little Pudding River Bridge, constructed in 1963, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation that includes replacing the timber decking and installing new guardrails. The Santiam River Bridge over the North Santiam River is also being strengthened, with new pavement and striping expected to be completed in 2025. Smaller but equally vital projects, like the Verda Lane bicycle lanes and sidewalks in Keizer, aim to boost pedestrian and cyclist safety near schools. Collectively, these enhancements represent a concerted effort to modernize and maintain the region's critical infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient travel for all users.
