Mythical Journey: Teen Edition of "Hadestown" Premieres in Brainerd
2025-06-20

This June, the Central Lakes College Performing Arts Center is set to captivate audiences with a theatrical journey into the depths and back. The production, titled "Hadestown: Teen Edition," reinterprets the classic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice through an innovative blend of American folk, jazz, and blues music. Featuring over 25 young performers from the Brainerd lakes area, this youth-driven show will take place at the Chalberg Theatre from June 24 to 27, with an additional matinee on June 29. A special ASL-interpreted performance is also scheduled for June 25. Directed by Amy Borash, with vocal direction by Kennedy Niska, the cast includes Brody Schultz as Orpheus, Gwendolyn Bowen as Eurydice, Randall Mitchell as Hades, Teagan Johnson as Persephone, and Colton Armbrust as Hermes. This Tony Award-winning musical underscores themes of love, hope, and fate, resonating across generations.

Set against the backdrop of a mythical world blending ancient lore with modern sensibilities, "Hadestown" follows the poet Orpheus on his quest to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the clutches of Hades. As the lovers grapple with challenges such as poverty, fear, and destiny itself, the audience is reminded of the enduring power—and cost—of hope. The original score, crafted by Anaïs Mitchell, integrates elements of folk, jazz, and blues, creating a unique theatrical experience that bridges generational gaps. Under the guidance of director Amy Borash and vocal coach Kennedy Niska, the talented ensemble brings this emotionally charged narrative to life.

Among the standout performances is Brody Schultz as Orpheus, who delivers a compelling portrayal before heading off to Luther College in the fall. Known for previous roles in productions like "The Sound of Music" and "Rent," Schultz infuses the character with sensitivity and passion. Opposite him, Gwendolyn Bowen makes her stage debut as Eurydice, tackling one of the most demanding roles in the production with remarkable poise. Bowen's performance captures the complexity of a young woman torn between survival and love. Producer Joey Yow praised the entire cast for their dedication, noting how each teen embraced the challenges of this musically and emotionally intricate piece.

A seasoned creative team supports the young performers, including Assistant Director Noah Barnhart, Stage Manager Travis Chaput, and designers Heidi Eckwall (lighting), Rachael Brutscher (costumes), and Tim Leagjeld (scenic design). Their collaborative efforts ensure that "Hadestown: Teen Edition" not only meets but exceeds expectations, offering audiences a memorable theatrical experience. This project is made possible through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Five Wings Arts Council, funded by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The magic of "Hadestown: Teen Edition" lies in its ability to connect diverse audiences through a timeless story retold with fresh energy and creativity. Tickets are available now online or by phone, inviting everyone to witness this extraordinary production that celebrates both youthful talent and the universal themes of love and resilience.
