Originating in France in 2017, Café Joyeux has pioneered a transformative approach to the coffee shop industry by actively hiring and training individuals with cognitive disabilities. Its successful launch of the first U.S. location in New York City in March 2024 marked a pivotal moment. Operated entirely by the non-profit Joyeux Foundation US, all generated profits are diligently reinvested into programs designed to provide vocational training and secure employment for the IDD community, embodying a truly circular social economy.
The imperative for such initiatives is highlighted by staggering statistics: an estimated 8 million Americans live with IDD, facing an alarming unemployment rate of approximately 78%, as reported by the U.S. Labor Department. Café Joyeux directly confronts this challenge, exemplified by its New York City cafe on Lexington Avenue, which proudly employs 15 individuals with disabilities.
