A New Boxing Gym in Indianapolis Offers More Than Just Sport
2025-05-11

In the heart of Indianapolis, a newly established boxing gym is transforming lives. Down But Not Out (DBNO) has recently opened its doors to the community, offering young individuals not only athletic training but also mentorship and lessons on character values. This venture, founded by Alphonso Bailey, began as a personal journey after his incarceration in 1981. His life changed through boxing, leading him to establish DBNO in 2019. The program emphasizes integrity and resilience over mere physical prowess, impacting countless young lives.

Revolutionizing Youth Development Through Boxing

On East 38th Street in Indianapolis, amidst a vibrant urban landscape, a groundbreaking initiative has emerged. In May, DBNO unveiled its state-of-the-art facility during a lively community gathering. For Alphonso Bailey, this milestone marked the culmination of years of dedication. After overcoming personal challenges and excelling in international boxing, Bailey returned to his hometown with a vision: to inspire youth through the discipline of boxing. Since its inception in 2019, DBNO has evolved from a school-based program into a beacon of hope for many.

Jaylen Beckwith, now a trainer at DBNO, joined the program in 2020 and credits Bailey for his positive transformation. His story resonated with Mapt Solutions, a local consulting firm, which awarded DBNO $75,000 in strategic services and a $25,000 cash prize. This support enabled Bailey to refine DBNO’s mission and secure a permanent location. With the new gym fully operational, DBNO aims to expand its reach and continue nurturing the next generation.

The success of DBNO underscores the power of mentorship and the importance of investing in community programs. Beyond teaching boxing skills, it instills values that transcend the ring, equipping young people with tools for lifelong success. As someone who has witnessed such transformations, I am inspired by how one person's passion can create meaningful change. It serves as a reminder that supporting such initiatives benefits entire communities, fostering growth and resilience among future leaders.
