Revitalizing a downtown landmark has become the mission of Cheryl Goldberg and Shauna Quill. Inspired by her late husband Michael’s deep passion for music, Cheryl envisioned an initiative that would honor his legacy while enriching the cultural fabric of Santa Barbara. This idea took root when Cheryl connected with Shauna, the newly appointed CEO of the Music Academy of the West, to explore ways to establish guitar classes in Michael’s memory. However, as plans unfolded, it became clear that the academy’s current facilities were insufficient for such an ambitious project.
The solution emerged through a transformative purchase. Earlier this year, Cheryl and Shauna finalized a $10 million acquisition of the former Forever 21 building at 901 State Street, marking the beginning of their vision to create a vibrant extension of the Music Academy. The two-story structure, complete with a spacious basement and rooftop terrace, offers ample opportunity for innovation. With Cheryl’s generous donation covering the cost of the property, the academy aims to raise an additional $15 million to fund renovations designed to enhance both functionality and acoustics. These improvements will cater to world-class musicians and provide a welcoming environment for local programs like Sing!, which offers tuition-free after-school music education.
This endeavor represents more than just a renovation; it symbolizes progress and potential. Mayor Randy Rowse expressed enthusiastic support for the project, noting its capacity to invigorate the city’s historic core and attract visitors and residents alike. By transforming a long-vacant space into a hub for classical music, Santa Barbara could redefine its downtown appeal. While challenges remain—such as navigating the permitting process and selecting an architect—the team remains optimistic about completing the project by 2028. In the interim, creative uses for the premises are already being considered, ensuring the site contributes positively to the community even before renovations conclude.
Through dedication and collaboration, Cheryl Goldberg and Shauna Quill are reshaping Santa Barbara’s musical landscape. Their efforts exemplify how personal passions can inspire collective growth, proving that investments in culture not only preserve heritage but also foster innovation and connection within communities. As this visionary project unfolds, it promises to leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
