Omaha Streetcar: Construction Plan & Stakeholder Views
2024-12-13
Along the proposed Omaha streetcar route, crews are hard at work. This construction not only brings about changes but also has significant traffic impacts. Let's delve into the details and various viewpoints surrounding this project.

Manager's Insights

Justin Wagner, the manager at DJ's Dugout in the Capitol District, shares his thoughts. He mentions that business has its ebbs and flows this time of the year. While he remains cautious, he'll believe in the positive impact of the streetcar when he actually sees it. "I've heard a lot of negative feedback so far, mostly negative. It's a wait-and-see situation for now," he says.

Economic Considerations

Steve Jensen from Mayor Jean Stothert's office emphasizes that revenue is far exceeding projections. This means the streetcar system is paying for itself as anticipated, and taxpayers are not at risk. "New development is more than sufficient to cover the cost increases. It makes more sense to have a streetcar for downtown travel rather than dedicating 40 square blocks of land to vacant parking stalls," he explains.

Construction Challenges

Megan Walter, the customer engagement manager, informs that M.U.D. has advised customers connected to the main below Farnam to prepare for a temporary gas shutdown. "We will provide information about the duration of this shutdown as we get closer to the actual work," she says. At the Harney and Farnam Street bridges, officials plan to announce a small number of full Interstate 480 closures on weekends. "These closures will be carefully coordinated to avoid big events like the College World Series. There will be advance notice and signed detour routes," states Austin Rowser from the city of Omaha.

Long-Term Impact

The Old Market, downtown, and the area around I-480 are expected to have more work until fall 2025. Wagner remains skeptical, stating, "I don't see too many immediate good things. We'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds."Click here for the latest headlines from KETV NewsWatch 7
