The music department at Oregon Junior/Senior High School has recently made waves by securing second place in the Class B category of the 2024–2025 Illinois High School Association Music Sweepstakes. This remarkable accomplishment marks their highest ranking since 2017, reflecting months of diligent preparation and a commitment to musical excellence. The IHSA sweepstakes evaluates high school music programs through two key competitive events: the Solo and Ensemble Contest and the Organization Music Contest. By combining scores from these events, an overall standing is determined for each participating school.
This year, students from OJSHS showcased their talents with 71 solo performances and 59 ensemble presentations during the solo contest. In the organizational competition, the school competed across multiple categories, including band, jazz band, choir, and jazz choir. Their efforts were rewarded with top scores and several "Best of Day" honors, particularly in jazz band and concert choir performances.
PJ Caposey, superintendent of Oregon schools, expressed pride in this outstanding achievement. He emphasized that it was a testament to the dedication, collaboration, and artistic excellence demonstrated by both students and staff throughout the academic year. The music program involves 69 band members and 56 choir participants, many of whom engage in both activities. Rehearsals take place not only as large ensembles but also individually and within smaller groups throughout the year.
Beyond the IHSA competitions, the department’s influence extends into the community via various performances. These include contributions from the jazz band, pep band, jazz choir, and Madrigals group. Additionally, the school boasts achievements such as having 38 students selected for the ILMEA District Festival and seven earning placements in the ILMEA All-State Band and Choir. The marching band also participated actively in regional contests throughout the fall.
A dedicated team of educators supports these successes, including Justine Davis, Zach Hall, Miles Beske, and Andy Eckardt, who oversee different aspects of the music curriculum. Accompanists Beth Hall, Cathy Hendricks, Karen Larson, Beth Nelson-Chase, and Erik Boehmke further enhance the high school program. Their collective efforts have elevated the school’s reputation in the realm of music education, making them a model for others to emulate.
The Oregon Junior/Senior High School music department has set a new benchmark with its recent accomplishments. Their journey highlights the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and a shared passion for music. Through their continued hard work and dedication, they are poised to inspire future generations while maintaining their position among the state’s leading music programs.
