After years of anticipation and construction, Phoenix has officially inaugurated its $1.34 billion South Central Extension and downtown hub. This milestone project adds 5.5 miles to the city's existing light rail network, increasing daily ridership by an estimated 8,000 passengers. Designed and constructed by Kiewit, a leading contractor based in Omaha, Nebraska, the expansion introduces eight new stations, bringing the total number of stops to 48. The system now operates two distinct lines—the north-south B Line and the east-west A Line—offering more frequent service and improved connectivity for residents across the region.

The journey toward this achievement began over a decade ago, with planning efforts commencing in 2012. Construction started in 2019 after several years of design work but encountered numerous challenges along the way. Delays were attributed to unforeseen utility relocations, disruptions caused by the global pandemic, and even opposition from local groups seeking to halt the project via ballot initiatives. Despite these hurdles, public support prevailed when Phoenix voters decisively rejected the measure aimed at stopping the expansion in 2020.

Beyond enhancing transportation options, the project incorporates sustainable features such as enhanced bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, native desert landscaping, and art installations crafted by local artists. These additions not only elevate the aesthetic appeal of the area but also promote eco-friendly urban development. Funding for the ambitious initiative came primarily from federal grants, supplemented by contributions through Phoenix Transportation 2050 and regional Proposition 400 investments.

Mayor Kate Gallego expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the project, highlighting its role in fostering a more sustainable and accessible community.
