2024-11-29
His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, has been a driving force behind significant energy projects. In a special ceremony held in Mesaieed Industrial City, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Amir, took a momentous step by laying the foundation stone of the blue ammonia plant. This event was attended by key figures such as His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, along with senior executives and officials from the entities involved in the project implementation.

The Significance of the Blue Ammonia Plant

The blue ammonia plant stands as a remarkable feat in the global energy landscape. It is the largest of its kind, representing a crucial milestone in QatarEnergy's strategy to expand in the clean energy sector. By producing low carbon ammonia, it emerges as one of the most important solutions to combat CO2 emissions and contribute to a greener future. This facility consists of an ammonia production unit with a capacity of 1.2 million tpy, accompanied by an additional unit for CO2 injection and storage with a capacity of 1.5 million tpy. QatarEnergy is set to provide the new plant with over 35 MW of electricity from the solar power plant currently under construction in Mesaieed Industrial City, thereby transforming it into blue ammonia. This enhancement in production capabilities will enable Qatar to provide the world with low-carbon products, in line with the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. His Excellency Minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "In building this facility, we will rely on our own capabilities and expertise in the construction and operation of ammonia plants used for fertilizer production. This will be a collaborative effort between QatarEnergy and Qatar Fertiliser Company – QAFCO."The blue ammonia plant joins a prestigious list of QatarEnergy's large and ambitious expansion projects in Qatar and across the world. These projects span various sectors including LNG, oil and gas exploration and production, petrochemicals, fertilizers, solar power, and more. His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to the consortium implementing the project, consisting of ThyssenKrupp and CCC, as well as the working teams from QatarEnergy and QAFCO. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in bringing this project to life. His Excellency also extended sincere thanks to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, for his unwavering patronage and unlimited support of the energy sector. Additionally, he thanked His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Amir and Chairman of the QatarEnergy Board of Directors, for laying the foundation stone of the blue ammonia plant. With an investment of approximately QAR4.4 billion, the plant will be constructed in Mesaieed Industrial City, which offers a strategic location, integrated infrastructure, and an ideal port that is one of the largest petrochemical export facilities in the Middle East. The plant is expected to commence production in the 2Q26, marking a significant milestone in QatarEnergy's strategy to expand into the cleaner energy sector.Read the article online at: https://www.hydrocarbonengineering.com/clean-fuels/29112024/qatarenergy-beings-construction-of-blue-ammonia-plant/Embed article link: (copy the HTML code below):QatarEnergy begins construction of blue ammonia plant
