2025-05-30

A cherished vision has come to fruition as the "Don José Sulaiman" scholarships were officially unveiled during the latest Martes de Café event. These financial aids aim to alleviate economic burdens for young boxers, enabling them to fully dedicate themselves to their careers in boxing. Sponsored by prominent figures Emilio López and Oscar Bautista, these monthly grants provide 10,000 pesos to promising athletes. At the inauguration of the gym honoring WBC's late Lifetime President, five amateur fighters and one professional received this prestigious support. The initiative reflects the aspirations of José Sulaiman, who had long planned such a program during his tenure as WBC leader.

At an esteemed gathering known as Martes de Café, Mauricio Sulaiman, current President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), announced the establishment of the "Don José Sulaiman" scholarships. This new endeavor is designed exclusively to assist young athletes by freeing them from monetary concerns so they can concentrate entirely on excelling in boxing. The generous sponsorship comes from businessman Emilio López and federal deputy Oscar Bautista, ensuring each recipient receives 10,000 pesos every month.

The ceremony took place at the newly opened "José Sulaiman Chagnón" boxing gym, which honors the legacy of the former WBC Lifetime President. Located in Chalco, State of Mexico, the facility aims to inspire future generations of boxers. During the event, five aspiring amateurs—Juan Pérez, Gael Razon, Sait Salazar, Ramón Nequiz, and Valeria Pérez—were honored with scholarships. Additionally, professional boxer Angel Sauceda was awarded, despite facing setbacks after fracturing his hand in a championship match. Although he triumphed in the first phase of the Riyadh Season Boxing Grand Prix, his injury prevents further participation.

Mauricio Sulaiman expressed that these scholarships represent a lifelong ambition of his father, José Sulaiman. He revealed that the idea originated many years ago when José served as the head of the WBC. His goal was always to create opportunities for talented individuals within the sport. Now, through this program, his dream becomes a reality, fostering hope and encouragement for countless young athletes aspiring to make their mark in the world of boxing.

Through the introduction of these scholarships, the spirit of José Sulaiman lives on, encouraging the next generation of boxers to achieve greatness without the distraction of financial strain. The support provided by influential sponsors ensures that deserving athletes can focus solely on honing their skills and pursuing success in the ring.
