Tragedy Strikes in Frayser as Reckless Driving Leads to Injured Children

Alleged Incident Leaves Four Children Hospitalized

According to the affidavit, the incident occurred on September 21, 2024, when 43-year-old Sharon Jackson was driving her white 2018 Jeep Compass northbound on Randolph Street in Frayser. Jackson is said to have veered onto the sidewalk, crashing into a mailbox before striking a group of four children. The victims, three 8-year-olds and one 7-year-old, were all transported to LeBonheur Children's Hospital for treatment of their injuries. One child required surgery to repair a dislocated hip, while others needed stitches and additional medical attention.

Suspect Flees the Scene, Claiming Gunshots as Justification

After the collision, Jackson is reported to have briefly stopped her vehicle before driving away without identifying herself or attempting to render aid to the injured children. When police later contacted her, Jackson admitted to being the driver involved in the incident but claimed she fled the scene because she had heard gunshots and another driver was chasing her, firing shots into her car. A witness, however, reported seeing the entire incident and hearing a shot after the crash, but was unable to determine the source of the gunfire.

Video Footage Corroborates Witness Account

Authorities reviewed video footage of the crash, which reportedly showed Jackson's vehicle driving on the sidewalk and striking the group of children. This evidence, combined with the witness statement, appears to contradict Jackson's claim that she was being chased and fired upon, leading to her decision to leave the scene.

Suspect Faces Numerous Charges, Scheduled for Arraignment

As a result of the incident, Sharon Jackson is facing a litany of charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, failure to exercise due care, four counts of aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage. Jackson is scheduled for a video arraignment on Monday, October 28th, at 9 a.m.The Frayser community and the city of Memphis as a whole are grappling with the aftermath of this troubling event, which has raised concerns about the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater accountability for reckless drivers. As the legal process unfolds, the well-being of the injured children and the safety of the public remain at the forefront of this ongoing investigation.
