Renowned Cinema in Lakeview Set to Unveil Third Screening Room
2025-05-29

A beloved cultural landmark in Lakeview is set to embark on a transformative journey. The Music Box Theatre, renowned for its rich history and cinematic excellence, will soon feature an additional screening room. This expansion, made possible by a substantial municipal grant, marks a significant milestone in the theater's evolution over the past century. The initiative aims not only to enhance the viewer experience but also to accommodate the growing demands of filmmakers and audiences alike.

Plans are underway to convert two vacant storefronts adjacent to the main entrance into a state-of-the-art auditorium with seating for 115 guests. Brody Sheldon, co-owner and CEO of Music Box Theatre, expressed enthusiasm about this venture, highlighting its potential to enrich the cinema's offerings. By integrating classic, independent, cult, documentary, and foreign films, the new screen will provide patrons with a broader spectrum of entertainment options. Moreover, renovations will include updated restroom facilities and strategic modifications within the existing structure, ensuring a seamless connection between all areas of the iconic venue.

This ambitious project underscores the commitment of the Music Box Theatre to fostering Chicago's vibrant film community. With the addition of a third screen, the theater can now offer more flexibility in scheduling and accommodate extended runs for popular films. Sheldon emphasized that this development will enable the theater to support both emerging and established artists while generating essential revenue to sustain the historic building. As part of the city’s efforts to empower local enterprises, the Music Box joins other esteemed recipients of the Community Development Grant, reflecting Mayor Brandon Johnson's vision for inclusive economic growth across neighborhoods. Through this initiative, the theater continues to solidify its legacy as a cherished cultural institution.
