The Kentucky Derby Museum is embarking on an ambitious renovation to enhance its iconic 360° feature film, The Greatest Race. This significant undertaking aims to provide visitors with an unparalleled cinematic experience that captures the essence of the renowned horse racing event. Renowned local production company Donna Lawrence Productions has taken the helm of this $2.3 million project, collaborating with several specialized firms to bring cutting-edge technology and innovative storytelling techniques to life.
Installation of advanced lighting and a state-of-the-art playback system marks the beginning of this transformation. Crews from Clearwing, based in Milwaukee, have initiated the installation of sophisticated lighting systems designed by Donna Lawrence Productions and Available Light, a Boston-based firm. Meanwhile, the new version of the film is being meticulously edited by Donna Lawrence Productions, ensuring it will debut on a brand-new playback system crafted by Communications Electronic Design, another Louisville-based company. The updated show will incorporate fresh footage from the 2024 Kentucky Derby, offering a modernized perspective on the thrilling competition set to premiere in April 2025 during the museum’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The Greatest Race has long been a cornerstone of the museum, captivating audiences for four decades. Patrick Armstrong, President and CEO of the Kentucky Derby Museum, emphasizes that this upgrade not only honors the exhibit's legacy but also ensures it remains a world-class attraction for future generations. By integrating immersive surround sound, atmospheric lighting, and dynamic effects, the revamped film will offer a fresh narrative on the 20 horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners competing in the "greatest two minutes in sports." Through this initiative, the museum reaffirms its commitment to innovation and storytelling, preserving the magic of the Derby for all to enjoy.
