A groundbreaking advancement in medical technology is set to transform the way dental and sinus conditions are diagnosed. Researchers from the Ateneo Laboratory for Intelligent Visual Environments (ALIVE) have collaborated with international experts to create a deep learning model that can identify tooth and sinus structures in dental X-rays with remarkable precision. This innovative system leverages advanced algorithms to detect odontogenic sinusitis, a condition often mistaken for common sinusitis, with an accuracy rate of 98.2%. By utilizing state-of-the-art object detection techniques, the model aims to streamline diagnosis and reduce misidentification.

The new system employs a highly efficient algorithm called YOLO 11n, which excels in analyzing dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs). Unlike traditional diagnostic methods that rely heavily on expert interpretation and multiple imaging processes, this AI-driven approach identifies critical anatomical relationships in real time. The study demonstrated that the YOLO 11n model significantly outperforms conventional methods by pinpointing affected areas swiftly and accurately. Moreover, it reduces reliance on CT scans, thereby minimizing radiation exposure for patients while offering a more affordable screening option, especially beneficial in regions with limited access to advanced medical equipment.
