Robert Suarez's Suspension Reduced After Shohei Ohtani Incident
2025-06-25

In a recent development involving San Diego Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez, his disciplinary action following an on-field altercation with Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has been adjusted. Originally handed a three-game suspension and undisclosed fine by Major League Baseball (MLB), the penalty was reduced to two games after a successful appeal. The incident occurred during a tense matchup between the Padres and Dodgers, where Suarez hit Ohtani in the shoulder, prompting immediate ejection from the game. This came shortly after a bench-clearing scuffle that saw both team managers ejected. Following the reduction of his suspension, Suarez decided to drop his appeal.

The situation escalated when rookie Jack Little of the Dodgers struck Padres standout Fernando Tatis Jr. on the wrist, triggering a large confrontation between the teams. This brawl followed a high-stress four-game series, marked by earlier tensions as both Tatis and Ohtani had been hit by pitches within half an inning of each other. Amidst this charged atmosphere, with the Padres leading by three runs in the bottom of the inning, Suarez made contact with Ohtani, nearly igniting another conflict. However, Ohtani diffused the situation before it could escalate further.

As a result of the events, both Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts were not only ejected but also given one-game suspensions along with fines. MLB initially ruled that Suarez intentionally threw at Ohtani, a claim the pitcher strongly disputes. In a statement released through an interpreter, Suarez clarified his intentions, expressing that he aimed solely to finish the game without provoking any issues. Unfortunately for him, the situation unfolded differently, resulting in his ejection and inability to complete his role in the match.

Following the game, medical evaluations revealed no serious damage to Tatis' wrist, allowing him to rejoin the lineup the subsequent night. With the resolution of Suarez’s appeal, he is set to begin serving his suspension, possibly starting on Wednesday as the Padres conclude a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. If this timeline holds, Suarez will be eligible to return to play on Saturday for the team's second match against the Cincinnati Reds, marking a step forward in moving past the incident.
