Salisbury Native Lt. Cmdr. Garrigues Set to Lead Naval Construction in Australia Post-Stanford
2025-01-05
From a high school graduate in Salisbury to a combat engineer in Iraq, Lt. Commander Bradford Garrigues Jr. has traversed an unconventional path that led him from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to Stanford University and now to Darwin, Australia. His latest role as the resident officer in charge of construction for all Navy operations on the continent marks a significant milestone in his distinguished career.

Embracing Challenges: From Combat Zones to Civil Engineering Mastery

The journey of Lt. Commander Bradford Garrigues Jr. is one of resilience and adaptation. After graduating from Salisbury High School in 1999, he enlisted in the Marines, serving as a combat engineer during the Second Battle of Fallujah. This experience not only shaped his character but also steered him towards a career in civil engineering. Garrigues recognized the tangible impact of engineering on communities, leading him to pursue further education with the support of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill.

His educational odyssey took him through Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. The versatility of this field allowed him to explore various applications, from infrastructure development to environmental sustainability. Joining the Navy Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) was a natural progression, providing opportunities to manage shore facilities across diverse locations.

Prestigious Education and Family Sacrifice

Garrigues' commitment to excellence was further exemplified by his selection to attend Stanford University, one of the CEC's prestigious institutions for advanced studies. Earning a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on sustainable design and construction, he gained invaluable knowledge and insights. However, this achievement came with significant personal sacrifices for his family. His wife, Amy Hu, continued her optometry practice through telehealth, while their son Chase adapted to life across the country. The challenges faced by his family were profound, highlighting the dedication required to balance professional ambitions with personal responsibilities.

The rigors of academic life at Stanford were demanding, especially for a 43-year-old among younger peers. Yet, Garrigues thrived, engaging with industry leaders like NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Tesla co-founder Marc Tarpenning. These experiences reinforced his resolve to make a meaningful difference, both professionally and personally.

Innovative Projects in Australia

Moving to Darwin, Australia, Garrigues will oversee critical infrastructure projects for the U.S. Marine Corps and Air Force on the Royal Australian Air Force base. As the resident officer in charge of construction, he will spearhead the development of new runways, parking aprons, and hangars. His role involves collaborating with contractors, conducting inspections, managing payments, and representing the Navy's interests across the continent. The scope of these projects underscores the strategic importance of maintaining robust military capabilities in the region.

Beyond Darwin, Garrigues may also be involved in projects in Catherine and other potential sites. Each project presents unique challenges and opportunities, requiring innovative solutions to meet stringent safety and operational standards. The expertise gained from his extensive background in civil engineering and naval operations positions him well to navigate these complexities.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Garrigues envisions a return to Salisbury after completing his service. In 2018, he and his wife purchased and restored the historic Woodson-Reamer House, a testament to their deep-rooted connection to the community. This restoration project reflects their commitment to preserving local heritage and enhancing the quality of life for residents. Upon retirement, they hope to reside in this beautifully restored home, contributing to the revitalization of downtown Salisbury.

Throughout his career, Lt. Commander Garrigues has consistently demonstrated leadership, adaptability, and a passion for making a positive impact. His journey from a high school graduate to a key figure in naval construction exemplifies the power of perseverance and continuous learning. As he embarks on this new chapter in Australia, Garrigues remains dedicated to advancing the mission of the Navy while fostering strong ties between nations.
