Seminole County Allocates Funds to Enhance Fire Station Security
2025-04-10

In response to a wave of vehicle break-ins at fire stations throughout the region, Seminole County has allocated nearly $200,000 to bolster security measures. Initially reported in May 2023, these incidents affected eight Central Florida fire stations, including two within Seminole County. Authorities confirmed that firearms were among the stolen items from the vehicles. The targeted stations included locations in Apopka and several others in Orange County. Following the thefts, Seminole County swiftly introduced new security protocols and training for firefighters, ensuring their vehicles and belongings are safeguarded. Recently, the county commission approved an additional $184,000 to further enhance security infrastructure.

After experiencing a series of car break-ins, Seminole County's fire department took immediate action to fortify its facilities. Fire Stations 12 and 14 were particularly impacted, prompting swift intervention by local authorities. Fire Chief Matt Kinley emphasized the importance of improving security measures, such as installing brighter lighting and surveillance cameras around the premises. These enhancements aim not only to deter potential criminals but also to reassure personnel that their property is safe while they focus on serving the community.

The allocation of funds signifies a commitment to protecting first responders who dedicate themselves to public safety. The $184,000 will primarily fund additional lighting and fencing at Fire Stations 12 and 14, with plans to extend similar measures to other stations. Collaboration with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office ensures comprehensive safety practices are implemented for all staff members. Since the initial break-ins, there has been ongoing cooperation between departments to review and strengthen existing security protocols.

By prioritizing the safety of its employees, Seminole County demonstrates its dedication to supporting those who protect its citizens. Enhanced security measures provide peace of mind to firefighters, allowing them to concentrate fully on their critical duties. This initiative exemplifies the county's proactive approach in addressing vulnerabilities exposed by recent events. Ultimately, the goal is to prevent future incidents and maintain trust within the community served by these essential workers.
