Women's bantamweight champion Shurretta Metcalf is approaching her upcoming unification bout against Cherneka Johnson with the spirit of an underdog. This mindset comes naturally to Metcalf, whose boxing career has been anything but conventional. Hailing from Dallas, Metcalf's professional journey began with three losses in her initial five fights. However, a turning point arrived after a 2018 draw against former champion Jamie Mitchell, as she then embarked on an impressive seven-fight winning streak, transforming into a legitimate contender.
More challenges emerged in 2022 when Metcalf suffered a defeat to Danielle Bennett, followed by a bout against Alicia Acero that was later declared a no-contest. Even her eventual rise to title contention was fraught with difficulties. In a twist of fate, to become the top challenger for the IBF belt, Metcalf defeated Miyo Yoshida. Ironically, Yoshida then stepped in as a late replacement for champion Ebanie Bridges and secured a victory. Finally, Metcalf claimed her championship by once again defeating Yoshida in their rematch last October.
Metcalf, at 40 years old, reflected on her arduous path, stating, \"My boxing journey has been tougher than most. My opponent lost and immediately got another title shot. If I had lost to Miyo, I likely wouldn't have had another opportunity for a title, given how difficult it was to get the first one.\"
Johnson, a 30-year-old from Melbourne, Australia, holds her own women's bantamweight title. Metcalf was originally slated to face WBO and WBC champion Dina Thorslund, but Thorslund's pregnancy led to her withdrawal. Metcalf expressed some frustration that, despite Johnson taking the fight on short notice, Johnson's name received top billing on promotional materials.
Metcalf emphasized, \"I still feel the need to earn respect. I draw motivation from being seen as the underdog. I look at these situations and tell myself, 'I'm going to prove everyone wrong.' I know who I am, and I am truly ready for this.\"
Johnson has also faced her share of challenges. While Metcalf had back-to-back fights with Yoshida, Johnson's title victory came against Nina Hughes. Their initial encounter was notable for an erroneous ring announcement, where Hughes was initially declared the winner before the decision was corrected in Johnson's favor. The rematch, in March, saw Johnson secure a decisive seventh-round stoppage victory.
Despite Johnson's recent successes, Metcalf believed Thorslund would have presented a more formidable challenge. \"I knew Dina was a tougher champion because she's stronger and more active than either I or Cherneka are,\" Metcalf explained. \"I understood I'd need to bring power against Dina and ensure my leg strength was at its peak.\"
Recently signing with Most Valuable Promotions, Metcalf is allocating her fight earnings to her training camp. She shares a strength and conditioning coach with undisputed junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner, who will also compete on the upcoming Netflix card, supporting the main event between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano III. Jessica Camara has also joined their training efforts.
Metcalf expressed her enthusiasm, stating, \"Being around these incredible athletes is truly influencing me. I'm receiving fantastic opportunities.\" Having started her career at the club level, Metcalf is determined to maximize this moment and showcase her abilities on such a significant stage. She affirmed, \"I'm going to make the most of this situation. My journey has been challenging, and I am absolutely going to make this count.\"
