A Ukrainian boxing enthusiast has found success and community in the UK after fleeing his homeland. Oleksandr Pohodin, who arrived in Sheffield with his family through the Homes For Ukraine program, transformed his passion for coaching into a thriving academy. Despite initial challenges such as language barriers, he now runs the Pohodin Boxing Academy at Syd’s Gym, creating a positive impact on local youth. His journey reflects resilience and adaptability, qualities that have earned him respect in his new environment.

Oleksandr’s integration into Sheffield began with support from Brendan Warburton MBE, founder of the Sheffield City Boxing Club. Warburton recognized Oleksandr's potential early on through their Facebook exchanges and offered him a chance to coach. Known for his dedication and rapport with both children and adults, Oleksandr quickly became an integral part of the club. "He connects deeply with young people," Warburton remarked. This connection inspired further opportunities, leading to the establishment of his own academy where he could fully realize his ambitions.

With encouragement from Syd Khan, owner of Syd’s Gym, Oleksandr expanded his reach by setting up the Pohodin Academy in May 2024. Khan admired Oleksandr’s innovative teaching methods and saw immense value in his contributions. Together, they developed an affiliated boxing club boasting 22 amateur fighters, many of whom are newcomers to the sport. Looking ahead, Oleksandr dreams of nurturing national and even world champions. His aspirations extend beyond personal achievement; they symbolize hope and progress for both his athletes and himself. Through determination, Oleksandr not only built a successful career but also fostered a sense of belonging in his adopted city.
