A group of nine television production students from Southampton Solent University undertook the challenge of delivering a professional broadcast for the 2025 RTS Southern Awards. Celebrating local television excellence, this event drew industry experts from various renowned organizations. The students handled all facets of the production, utilizing cutting-edge university equipment and demonstrating exceptional teamwork and problem-solving skills under pressure. Their efforts were praised by both faculty members and industry professionals, showcasing the value of hands-on learning experiences.
The students played an integral role in every stage of producing the award ceremony broadcast. From coordinating with the RTS to conducting location assessments and collaborating with technical experts, they ensured that all aspects of the project were meticulously planned and executed. They leveraged advanced tools such as Sony cameras, Blackmagic mixers, and streaming iMacs to deliver high-quality content.
This comprehensive approach included using fixed cameras for the main stage, wireless handhelds for capturing audience reactions, and on-stage monitors for synchronization. Final-year student Alex Dobson recounted how a last-minute change in room position tested their adaptability and teamwork. Despite these challenges, the team successfully completed setup ahead of schedule, allowing ample time for thorough testing before the live stream commenced. This experience underscored the importance of flexibility and resourcefulness in real-world scenarios.
Solent University's focus on practical, real-world learning was highlighted through this project. Senior lecturer Kate O’Driscoll emphasized that such live projects are integral to the curriculum, providing students with invaluable opportunities to collaborate with actual clients and build their portfolios while still in school. Alex Dobson and his peers received commendation for their dedication, innovation, and professionalism throughout the process.
Alex expressed confidence about transitioning into the broadcasting industry, thanks to the support and mentorship received during his studies. He aims to work as a camera operator and broadcast engineer post-graduation, believing that these projects have equipped him with the necessary skills to perform at a professional level. Such initiatives not only enhance students' competence but also bridge the gap between academic training and industry expectations, ensuring graduates enter the workforce ready to contribute effectively.
