The United States has been a significant contributor to India's development efforts since 1951. Seven key projects, with a combined budget of approximately $750 million, were highlighted in the Finance Ministry's annual report for 2023-24. These projects span across crucial sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, disaster management, health, and water sanitation. In addition to these projects, the Department of Economic Affairs under the Finance Ministry provided detailed insights into the allocation of resources. For the fiscal year 2023-24, USAID committed $97 million towards implementing these programs. Notably, the funding did not include any initiatives aimed at increasing voter turnout, as some misleading reports had suggested. Instead, the emphasis was placed on areas that directly impact the well-being and resilience of communities. Specific projects included promoting sustainable forest management, climate adaptation, and advancing energy efficiency technologies.

The long-standing collaboration between the US and India through USAID has seen over $17 billion in economic assistance disbursed across more than 555 projects since its inception. This aid has played a pivotal role in supporting India's development journey. However, recent political discourse has brought attention to the nature of this assistance. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed concern over statements made by the previous US administration regarding a $21 million grant allegedly intended to boost voter turnout. Clarifications from Indian officials emphasized that all activities conducted by USAID in India are done in good faith, and any suggestions of ulterior motives are unfounded.
