Empowering Communities Through Comprehensive Mental Health Services

Pioneering Mental Health Solutions in Upstate South Carolina

Prisma Health has taken a significant stride in addressing the growing need for comprehensive mental health care. The newly inaugurated Behavioral Health and Wellness Pavilion stands as a beacon of hope for residents in Greenville and surrounding areas. Spanning an impressive 24,000 square feet, this facility offers a robust array of therapy options and specialized day treatment programs. Notably, it introduces a unique mother-infant wellness program designed specifically for women navigating depression and anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum—a first in the state. The opening of this pavilion marks a pivotal moment for mental health care in the region. By expanding the former Brownell Center into the Grove Road Clinic, Prisma Health has created a hub where individuals can receive tailored support for their mental health needs. This expansion underscores the organization's commitment to providing accessible and effective mental health services to those who require them most.

Innovative Day Treatment Programs Offer Enhanced Support

One of the standout features of the new Wellness Pavilion is its suite of day treatment programs. These programs cater to both adults and adolescents, addressing a variety of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Karen Lommel, the Robert A. Jolley Jr. Endowed Chair of Psychiatry and Community Health, highlights the benefits of these daytime programs, which provide more intensive care than traditional office visits without necessitating hospitalization.Patients participating in these programs can benefit from structured therapeutic environments while still maintaining connections with their families and communities. This balance between intensive treatment and home support is crucial for recovery. As Dr. Lommel notes, “It’s a very supportive option that we’re thrilled to offer on an expanded basis in the Upstate.” The adult programs will be operational by the end of the month, while adolescent-specific programs, including an eating-disorders program and a general behavioral health disorders program, are slated to begin in May.

A Major Investment in Mental Health Infrastructure

Prisma Health’s commitment to mental health extends beyond this new outpatient facility. The organization is concurrently constructing a 112-bed behavioral health hospital as part of a nearly $143 million investment in expanding mental health services in the region. This ambitious project reflects Prisma Health’s dedication to improving mental health outcomes for the over 1.6 million patients it serves annually across South Carolina and Tennessee. As a private, nonprofit health company, Prisma Health boasts an extensive network comprising 19 acute and specialty hospitals, 3,131 licensed beds, 320 practice sites, and more than 5,900 employed and independent clinicians. With this new Wellness Pavilion, Prisma Health is not only enhancing its capacity to serve but also setting a new standard for mental health care delivery in the southeastern United States.

Addressing the Mental Health Crisis with Expanded Access

The significance of Prisma Health’s initiative cannot be overstated. Mental health challenges have long been under-addressed in many communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By tripling patient access to outpatient behavioral health services, Prisma Health is making a tangible impact on the lives of countless individuals who may have previously struggled to find adequate care. The introduction of specialized programs like the mother-infant wellness initiative and the various day treatment options represents a forward-thinking approach to mental health care. These programs recognize the complexity of mental health issues and offer targeted solutions that can make a profound difference. As Prisma Health continues to expand its offerings, it sets a powerful example for other healthcare providers, demonstrating the importance of prioritizing mental health in overall patient care.
