Fire Engulfs Under-Construction Apartment Complex in Ogden
2025-01-27

In a shocking turn of events, an under-construction apartment complex in Ogden was destroyed by a massive fire on Saturday. The blaze spread rapidly due to strong winds and the nature of the building materials, leaving investigators with a challenging task to determine its origin and cause. Firefighters anticipate that debris removal will commence within a day, allowing for further investigation. A video from a nearby elementary school captured the fire's progression, showing flames emerging from a third-floor window before engulfing the entire structure within minutes. The incident has affected surrounding buildings, including DaVinci Elementary School, which remains closed for cleanup and safety assessments.

Details of the Incident

On a windy Saturday afternoon, residents of Ogden were startled by an inferno that consumed an under-construction apartment complex located near DaVinci Elementary School on 215 22nd Street. Around 4:37 PM, a video obtained by KSL TV revealed flames erupting from a third-floor window. Within a mere ten minutes, the entire five-story structure was ablaze. Principal Erika Kortman recounted the harrowing experience, noting that her staff immediately alerted her via phone calls. “I thought we would lose our building,” she admitted, referring to the damage sustained by some windows at the elementary school.

Ogden City Fire Chief Mike Mathieu explained that the rapid spread of the fire was exacerbated by the wind conditions and the nature of the construction materials. The kiln-dried lumber used in the building provided ample fuel and oxygen, causing the fire to proliferate swiftly. As a result, embers sparked spot fires up to two blocks away, affecting neighboring structures such as the IRS building a block to the west. Despite the dire circumstances, firefighters managed to protect surrounding properties, ensuring that the damage was contained.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with assistance from two Ogden Police detectives and three ATF investigators. Although no evidence suggests foul play, the cause remains undetermined. DaVinci Elementary School will remain closed until Monday for safety reasons, as workers address the broken glass scattered across the grounds. Principal Kortman expressed gratitude for the firefighters' efforts, emphasizing that the situation could have been far worse without their swift response.
