A former school custodian from New Jersey, Giovanni Impellizzeri, has been sentenced to a significant prison term after pleading guilty to contaminating food intended for students and staff, as well as possessing child pornography. The case came to light in 2023 when authorities discovered videos of him tampering with food at Elizabeth Moore School in the Upper Deerfield Township School District. As part of his plea agreement, Impellizzeri admitted to official misconduct and child porn possession, leading to an eight-year prison sentence with a minimum of five years before parole eligibility.
In the fall of 2023, officials at the elementary school in Upper Deerfield Township alerted the New Jersey State Police after receiving anonymous tips about posts on social media. Investigators uncovered evidence showing that Impellizzeri had engaged in disturbing acts involving inanimate objects within the school premises. He contaminated food products and utensils in the cafeteria using bleach and bodily fluids such as saliva, urine, and feces. Prosecutors noted that these tainted items were likely served to both students and staff. Additionally, investigators found child pornography in his possession during their inquiry.
Impellizzeri's actions caused distress among parents and school staff. Marisol Perez Cruz, whose child attended the school, expressed her anguish in court, stating how she felt betrayed by the lack of safety for her child in a place she believed was secure. During sentencing, Impellizzeri addressed the court, expressing regret over his deeds and wishing he could undo them. His attorney, Emily Bell, argued that while her client had committed serious offenses, he was not inherently a bad person.
The investigation began after multiple anonymous tips pointed to suspicious posts on social media platforms. It emerged that Impellizzeri had worked as a custodian since September 2019. Following his arrest on October 31, 2023, it was revealed that he had no prior criminal record but had a history of mental health issues. The Upper Deerfield Township School District cooperated fully with law enforcement, ensuring all potentially contaminated food and utensils were discarded or sanitized. Impellizzeri was placed on administrative leave and subsequently terminated.
School district superintendent Dr. Peter Koza highlighted the impact of Impellizzeri's actions on the entire community during the court proceedings. He emphasized that while the events were unconscionable, the community remained resilient and would not be defined by this individual's heinous behavior. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation between schools and law enforcement to protect children and maintain trust within educational environments.
